Key Takeaways from the ASQ Audit Division Conference

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to attend and speak at the ASQ Audit Division Conference. This year’s theme was AI in Auditing, which brought some valuable insights. This conference was a fantastic way to stay current in the field and deepen relationships within the auditing community. Here are a few of my key takeaways:
AI for Data Analysis
Several speakers highlighted the power of AI for data analysis. Audits rely on sampling data and typically only a small sample set can be looked at due to time constraints. AI has the capability to analyze large amounts of data in a short time offering a more thorough look at the process. This capability enhances our ability to identify compliance issues and detect anomalies that might otherwise go unnoticed.
AI for Audit Prep
AI’s data analysis abilities can also be used for audit preparation. AI can be used to review documents quickly, summarize key points and identify any inconsistencies in procedures. Additionally, AI tools can review the organization's nonconformances, risks and any changes that have taken place since the previous audit. These capabilities can save time and provide auditors with a more complete overview of items to explore during the audit.
Relationships and Community
While the sessions were packed with valuable content, the heart of the conference is the relationships. I recently relocated and it was great to meet people from my new area and hear their recommendations for local restaurants and resources. I also connected in-person with colleagues that I’d previously only seen on video calls and I made new friendships and connections that may lead to future collaborations. This is truly a welcoming and supportive community.
“Don’t Run in Front of the Troops”
One keynote speaker, Colonel J. Craig Flowers, shared a story that stuck with me. He recalled a time he was late and was running to a meeting. A peer cautioned him not to run in front of the troops because it makes them nervous. It was a great illustration that our actions and attitude impact those around us. Whether we show calmness, empathy, or curiosity, our demeanor sets the tone. Being intentional in our bearing can lead to more meaningful and productive interactions with our friends, family and colleagues.
